Adair Margo, former Humanities Texas board member and founder of the Tom Lea Institute in El Paso, has been appointed to the National Council on the Humanities, the advisory body for the National Endowment for the Humanities. Council appointees were nominated by President Donald Trump in 2018 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 1, 2019.
Margo previously served as Chair of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities from 2001–2009 and received the 2008 Presidential Citizens Medal from George W. Bush. In 2007, she received the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico's highest decoration awarded to non-citizens.
Margo served on the Humanities Texas board of directors from 2004–2009 and played a crucial role in the capital campaign to restore the Byrne-Reed House. A third-generation El Pasoan, Margo is a devoted champion of artist Tom Lea, whose oral history Margo recorded and co-edited. Tom Lea: An Oral History (1995) won the Border Regional Library Association Southwest Book Award.
